How to Host Your First Neighbor Meet Up

You’re neighbor community is talking on OneRoof, and you’re thinking of how to get everyone together for an IRL meeting!  Here’s how to set up your first event.

‍

Step 1 - Brainstorm Ideas

  • Get clear on what you want to get out of the meet up (examples: get to know each other, social hour, bonding over an activity, celebrate a holiday, a game, etc.)
    ‍
  • Based on your goal, write up with a list of ideas of things you can do with your neighbors

‍

Step 2 - Find a Space + Pick a Date

  • Consider your options for location. Some examples include: your building’s common area, a local bar, the park nearby, etc.
    ‍
  • If you need to book anything in your building or make reservations at an external location, make sure you do so as soon as possible
    ‍
  • Choose a date that you think works best for the type of people in your building (consider if they are families, college students, etc.) and schedule it far enough in advance that people have time to pre-plan and hold the date, but not so far out that it could be forgotten.
    ‍

Step 3 - Create Your Event on the App

  • Tap in the app and click on the “Create an Event” button. Name your event something fun but obvious to what activity will occur. Set the date and time, and then add a short and sweet description - just a couple sentences to draw people in. You can select an event cover and then either preview or publish your event and voila! Your event is live.

‍

Step 4 - Collect the Supplies You’ll Need

  • Make a list of the things you’ll need for the event. Make sure you think of everything! For example, if you are having a wine night, you’ll need to get cups as well, and have a wine opener available.
    ‍
  • Go out and buy supplies ahead of time so that you’re not rushing around at the last minute. Be smart about what you’re buying to make sure you are staying within your budget.
    ‍
  • Alternatively, ask your neighbors to contribute by bringing their own cup or plate, as well as a drink/snack/game to share.

‍

Step 5 - Send Out Reminders

  • Send out a message in the general channel to remind your building that your event is happening! Best practice is to send out a message a week ahead of time, and then the day before. You can even send out a message at the start of the event to get some more last minute attendees to swing by.
    ‍
  • If you have any friends in the building or see people that are often speaking up in chats, you can message them directly to gather up even more accountability to their attendance.

‍

Step 6 - Host Your Event!

  • Show up on time, meet new people, and introduce others! Enjoy your event, and as the host, make sure everyone else is able to do the same.

‍

After your first event, repeat steps 1-6 to continue hosting successful OneRoof events!
